He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve as an officer with the 824th Transportation Co. (Heavy Boat) in Morehead City, NC. Marty worked in his family construction business for over 20 years as Vice President, estimator and general manager with an Unlimited Highway License.
